One of the most common issues with a remote astrophotography setup is a device that suddenly refuses to connect through ASCOM. Your mount, focuser, filter wheel, rotator, or other equipment may have worked perfectly the night before, but now NINA or another imaging program can't connect to it. Before assuming you have a hardware problem, check the ASCOM driver.
ASCOM Drivers Can Become Corrupted
ASCOM drivers are the software layer that allows programs such as NINA, PHD2, Sequence Generator Pro, and other astronomy applications to communicate with your equipment. Occasionally, an ASCOM driver can become corrupted or stop functioning correctly. This can happen after Windows updates, software updates, unexpected shutdowns, driver changes, or sometimes seemingly for no obvious reason.
The result can look like a hardware failure even though the equipment itself is perfectly fine.
Common symptoms include:
A device that previously worked suddenly won't connect
NINA reports an ASCOM connection or driver error
The device appears in Windows but won't connect through your imaging software
The ASCOM device chooser behaves unexpectedly
Restarting the computer doesn't solve the problem
The manufacturer's software sees the device, but ASCOM does not
Try Restarting First
Before reinstalling anything, start with the simplest solution. Close your astronomy applications and restart the imaging computer. After Windows has fully restarted, try connecting the device again. For a remote system, you can also verify that the device is actually receiving power and that Windows still recognizes the USB connection. If everything appears normal but the ASCOM connection continues to fail, the driver itself may be the problem.
Delete and Reinstall the Device's ASCOM Driver
A surprisingly effective fix is to completely uninstall the ASCOM driver for the affected device and reinstall a fresh copy. Don't simply install the same driver over the existing installation if you're troubleshooting possible corruption. Instead:
Close NINA and any other astronomy programs using the device.
Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed Apps.
Locate the ASCOM driver for the affected device.
Uninstall the driver.
Restart the computer.
Download a fresh copy of the manufacturer's current ASCOM driver.
Install the driver.
Restart the computer again if requested.
Open NINA or your preferred imaging program.
Select the newly installed ASCOM driver and reconnect the device.
You may need to re-enter settings such as the device's COM port or other configuration information.
Don't Immediately Assume It's a Physical Problem
This is especially important with remote telescope hosting. If your telescope is hundreds or thousands of miles away, seeing "Failed to Connect" can make it seem like someone needs to physically visit the telescope. Usually, they don't.
Before requesting onsite assistance at AstroPeak, work through the software side of the system first. A good troubleshooting order is:
Restart software
Restart computer
Verify power
Verify Windows sees the device
Check USB/COM settings
Reinstall the ASCOM driver.
If Windows recognizes the equipment but your astronomy software cannot communicate with it, reinstalling the ASCOM driver should be high on your troubleshooting list.
What If Reinstalling the Driver Doesn't Work?
If a clean ASCOM driver installation doesn't resolve the problem, you can begin looking deeper into the system. Possible causes include USB connection problems, incorrect COM ports, power issues, Windows device assignments, manufacturer-specific software problems, or an actual hardware failure. ASCOM drivers can become corrupted. If equipment that previously worked suddenly stops connecting, deleting and reinstalling the device's ASCOM driver can often get your remote telescope back online without anyone ever touching the telescope.
