Mount Selection: Our Recommendations

Your mount is arguably the most important piece of equipment in a remote astrophotography system. A great telescope and camera can't compensate for a mount that doesn't track reliably, guide consistently, or recover properly after a restart.

At AstroPeak, we recommend prioritizing reliability over specifications. A remote mount needs to connect every night, respond predictably to software commands, park correctly, perform reliable meridian flips, and operate for long periods without physical intervention.

Mounts We Recommend

We've had the best experience with several mounts at AstroPeak.

ZWO AM Series

The AM3/AM3N, AM5/AM5N, and AM7 are excellent choices for remote imaging. They're compact, widely supported, work well with both ASIAIR and NINA, and the newer harmonic-drive designs eliminate many of the mechanical issues associated with traditional geared mounts.

ML Astro

ML Astro harmonic mounts are another strong option. The SAL-33 or the ML AstroOne offer the simplicity and compact design that makes harmonic mounts particularly attractive for permanent remote installations.

Astro-Physics

Astro-Physics mounts remain some of the best premium astrophotography mounts available. They're extremely well built, proven, and an excellent choice for customers building a higher-end remote system.

OnStep-Based Harmonic Mounts

We've also had good experiences with properly built harmonic mounts running OnStep. OnStep provides excellent remote-control capabilities and can be a very capable platform when paired with quality mechanical components.

Mounts We Are More Cautious About

Mounts intended for unattended remote use should be able to recover predictably after a power interruption, communications failure, or loss of position. We strongly recommend a mount with reliable automatic homing or absolute position recovery, stable supported drivers, remote power-cycle capability, and configurable slew and safety limits.

Some mounts — including the Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro and certain models from Celestron and iOptron — may require additional configuration, testing, or hands-on intervention and therefore may not be suitable for every AstroPeak installation. Compatibility is assessed by specific model, firmware, control software, payload, and imaging configuration.

Most of you are sending mounts from the "recommended" list above. For others, please consult AstroPeak if you're concerned about their use in a remote observatory.

Guiding Isn't Everything

Don't select a mount based entirely on someone's screenshot showing 0.3" RMS guiding. For remote imaging, we'd rather have a mount that consistently guides at 0.5–0.7", connects every night, parks correctly, and runs for months without intervention than a mount capable of incredible guiding that frequently requires physical troubleshooting. Consistency and reliability matter more than chasing the lowest possible RMS number.

Before You Ship Your Mount

Consider the recommended mounts listed above and consult us if you'd prefer another. Whatever you choose, thoroughly test it before sending it remote. Make sure it connects reliably, guides properly, performs meridian flips, parks correctly, and recovers after a computer or power restart. A good remote mount shouldn't require much attention. It should disappear into the background and let you concentrate on collecting data.
